I added the TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre 5 (Ref. WV211B.BA0787) to my collection back in 2019. Since then, I’ve been wearing it through various phases of daily life, travel and work.

This review is not going to be filled with breathless hype or exaggerated claims about horological perfection. Instead, it is an honest, personal look at what it is actually like owning this specific Carrera. If you are considering buying one on the pre-owned market, this review is for you. And yes, we definitely need to talk about Inception.

If you are short on time, here are the Pros and Cons

The Pros:

Timeless Dimensions: The 39mm case is extremely comfortable, versatile and avoids aging poorly with changing fashion trends.

Exceptional Build Quality: Punches well above its price point with crisp case edges, alternating polished and brushed steel, dual sapphire crystals and a beautifully finished bracelet.

Cinematic Pedigree: While it shouldn’t be the only reason to buy a watch, the connection to Inception adds a layer of enjoyable history to the piece.

Reliable Movement: The Calibre 5 is a robust, well-known movement that will never be difficult or exorbitantly expensive to maintain.

The Cons:

Water Resistance: 50 meters with a push-pull crown restricts this watch to land-based activities.

Lug Width: The 19mm lug width makes sourcing third-party straps slightly inconvenient.

Lack of Clasp Adjustment: Achieving the perfect bracelet fit relies strictly on adding or removing half-links.

Lume: Only on the hour and minute hands, that’s why Dial Legibility & Lume gets an 8 out of 10.

The Inception Connection: A Grounded Choice

Watches in movies are often chosen for a reason. Sometimes it is a paid product placement that feels forced; other times, the prop department selects a timepiece that perfectly reflects the psychology of the character.

If you are a fan of Christopher Nolan’s 2010 sci-fi masterpiece Inception, you might already know that the protagonist, Dom Cobb (played by Leonardo DiCaprio), wears a TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre 5. Specifically, he wears the WV211B.BA0787.

In a film obsessed with time, reality, and totems used to distinguish the waking world from the dream world, Cobb’s watch plays a subtle but thematic role. DiCaprio was a TAG Heuer ambassador at the time, which explains the brand placement, but the choice of this specific model was incredibly fitting for the character. Cobb is a pragmatic, sharply dressed professional who operates in high-stakes environments. He does not wear a flashy chronograph or an oversized dive watch; he wears a 39mm, simple, three-hand automatic.

In the following photos, you’ll see just how seamlessly this design blends into virtually every scenario and outfit from Inception.

Design and Aesthetics: The 39mm Case

One of the most significant advantages of the WV211B.BA0787 is its sizing. At 39mm in diameter, it sits in what many watch enthusiasts consider the “Goldilocks” zone. Over the past decade, watch trends have fluctuated wildly, moving from massive 45mm oversized cases back to more traditional, vintage-inspired sizes. A 39mm case is virtually immune to these trends; it looked appropriate fifty years ago, it looks appropriate today, and it will remain appropriate in the future.

The case itself is polished stainless steel. The lugs have a slight angular facet to them, a hallmark of the Carrera design language established by Jack Heuer in the 1960s. The bezel is fixed, smooth, and highly polished, which elevates the watch from a strict sports watch to something that can easily be worn with formal attire.

It is worth noting that the polished surfaces are prone to picking up hairline scratches over time. After seven years of ownership, my case shows the inevitable signs of wear. However, these minor micro-scratches, often referred to as “character” by collectors, do not detract from the overall aesthetic, though they are something to be aware of if you expect your watches to remain pristine.

The Dial

At first glance indoors, the deep black dial looks strictly business: clean, minimalist, and beautifully legible. A downside here is that it only has lume on the hour and minute hands, earning an 8 out of 10 in Dial Legibility & Lume. But the moment you step outside, it completely transforms.

Because the steel batons are meticulously polished and sharply faceted, they act like tiny prisms. When direct sunlight hits them, the light bounces off the angled edges, creating that dazzling, star-like twinkle. Set against the inky black backdrop of the dial, the high-contrast light play is incredibly striking.

It is this exact detail that takes the watch from a classic, quiet timepiece to something dynamic and alive on your wrist. The way a dial interacts with light is often what separates a good design from a truly great one.

The Sapphire Crystal

The dial is protected by a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. Seven years later, the crystal on my model remains completely flawless. Notably, it does not feature an anti-reflective coating on the exterior. While that might sound like a drawback on paper, the slight dome on the sapphire crystal turns this into an aesthetic advantage. Rather than washing out the dial, the rounded glass catches ambient light at distinct angles, creating some truly superb, dynamic reflections that bring the rich black dial to life as you move your wrist.

The Bracelet

The watch comes on a stainless steel bracelet finished with brushed outer and center links, seamlessly divided by two thin, high-polish accents. It secures to the wrist via a folding clasp with twin push-button releases. The clasp feels secure and clicks into place with a reassuring mechanical snap.

If there is one criticism I have of the bracelet, it is the lack of micro-adjustment on the clasp. Our wrists expand and contract slightly throughout the day depending on temperature and hydration. Many modern watches feature quick-adjust mechanisms in the clasp to accommodate this; the WV211B.BA0787 relies on half-links. However, once that perfect fit is finally dialed in, I genuinely like this bracelet because it is exceptionally comfortable on the wrist for all-day wear.

Lug Width Quirks

The lug width on this specific Carrera is 19mm. From a design perspective, 19mm proportions look excellent against the 39mm case. From an ownership perspective, however, 19mm can be slightly frustrating. The vast majority of aftermarket leather, canvas, and rubber straps are manufactured in 18mm or 20mm sizes. If you are someone who likes to frequently change straps to alter the look of your watch, you will find your options are a bit more limited, though custom strap makers can easily accommodate the size.

Movement: The TAG Heuer Calibre 5

Flipping the watch over reveals an exhibition case back made of sapphire crystal, allowing a clear view of the movement. The engine powering this watch is the TAG Heuer Calibre 5.

For transparency in this review, it is important to clarify what the Calibre 5 is. It is not an in-house movement built from scratch by TAG Heuer. Instead, it is an automatic movement based on the venerable ETA 2824-2 or the Sellita SW200-1 architecture (TAG Heuer utilizes both interchangeably for the Calibre 5, depending on production year).

Some purists may view the lack of an in-house movement as a negative, but I view it as a distinct practical advantage.

The ETA 2824/Sellita SW200 is arguably the most tested, proven, and reliable workhorse movement in the Swiss watch industry. It has a power reserve of 38 hours and it beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4Hz), which gives the sweeping seconds hand a very smooth, continuous motion across the dial. I usually call this 8 beats per second, as it’s much easier to visualize the smoothness over a single second, whereas a Seiko 5, for example, runs at 6 beats per second and isn’t quite as smooth.

Because this movement is so common, it can be serviced by virtually any competent watchmaker in the world. You are not forced to send it back to the manufacturer and wait months for a proprietary repair. It is not chronometer-certified (COSC), but since 2019, my Calibre 5 has kept very reliable time. It generally runs at about +8 seconds per day and on a timegrapher across different positions, it ranges between +2s and +18s, with a beat error of 0.2ms to 0.3ms.

Real-World Limitations

No honest watch review is complete without discussing limitations. The WV211B.BA0787 is not a dive watch, and its specifications reflect that. It has a water resistance rating of 50 meters (5 ATM).

In the watch world, 50 meters does not mean you can dive 50 meters underwater. It generally means the watch can easily withstand rain, washing your hands, and perhaps a quick, accidental submersion in a shallow pool. The crown is a standard push-pull crown, not a screw-down crown.

As a result, I treat this watch as a “dry” timepiece. I do not shower with it, I do not swim with it, and I take it off if I am doing heavy manual labor. It is a robust stainless steel watch, but it is built for the office, the city, and formal events, not for extreme sports or aquatic environments.

That makes the Carrera’s role in Inception rather amusing. Cobb spends much of the film running, fighting and being thrown through collapsing dream worlds, hardly the ideal environment for a polished Carrera with 50 metres of water resistance. In real life, a G-Shock would be a far more appropriate choice for that kind of punishment. Then again, perhaps that is another clue that he is dreaming.

Build Quality and Long-Term Wearability

When it comes to build quality, this watch punches well above its price point. The crisp edges, alternating polished and brushed steel finishes, and dual sapphire crystals, front and back, give it a premium feel. Even the bracelet construction and finishing are simply stunning.

The Concept of the “GADA” Watch

In watch collecting circles, there is a concept known as the “GADA” watch, Go Anywhere, Do Anything. A GADA watch is typically a stainless steel piece with a neutral dial color that can transition seamlessly from a t-shirt and jeans on the weekend to a suit and tie in the boardroom.

The TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre 5 is a textbook example of a GADA watch. The lack of a bezel insert and the minimalist black dial give it a dressy undertone, while the steel bracelet and Carrera heritage keep it grounded in casual, sporty territory. If I am traveling for a week and can only pack one watch to cover casual dinners, business meetings, and general tourism. It blends in perfectly. It does not draw unwanted attention, but it holds up to close inspection from those who appreciate mechanical timepieces.

Final Thoughts: Looking Back After Years on the Wrist

To wrap up this long-term review, having the Tag Heuer Carrera Calibre 5 WV211B.BA0787 on my wrist since 2019 has proven that a good automatic watch doesn’t need to be overly complicated. Over the past few years, it has proven to be an incredibly reliable watch. The robust stainless steel build and minimalist black dial offer a practical, timeless aesthetic that transitions easily from the office to the weekend.

What makes this specific reference special for me, however, is its cinematic connection. As a big fan of Inception, knowing this is the exact watch model worn by Leonardo DiCaprio in a masterpiece, adds a highly personal layer to my ownership experience. It functions as my own subtle reality check, a small, functional totem, without relying on a flashy design to make a statement.

Let’s be real for a second. If I spin a small metal top on my desk and it never falls over, I might be in a dream. But if I look down at my wrist and see a fresh fingerprint or a new micro-scratch on my Carrera’s highly polished bezel, I know for an absolute fact that I am awake in the real world, because if I were in a dream, my watch would never have scratched.

MTP-E740-2A1V (Navy Blue): While the orange model screams for attention, the Casio MTP-E740-2A1V takes a much more subdued, versatile approach. The navy blue dial darkens the transparency effect slightly, meaning the exposed day and date wheels aren’t quite as loud as they are on the orange version.

Instead, the blue model offers a “stealth wealth” appeal. From a distance, it looks like a traditional, classy navy blue dress watch. But upon closer inspection, the translucent mechanical details reveal themselves. It is the perfect choice if you want to wear the watch to the office or in more formal settings where the bright orange might feel a bit too loud.

Specs & The Sapphire Compromise

For an asking price of just £85, the spec sheet is incredibly solid, though it does come with one minor drawback.

Case Size: 39.8mm diameter (a highly wearable size for almost any wrist).

Thickness: A sleek 8.7mm profile.

Water Resistance: 50 meters (splash and rain resistant).

Movement: Reliable Casio 5339 quartz with a 3-year battery life.

Glass: Mineral Crystal.

The only real downside here is that the watch doesn’t have sapphire crystal glass. Because it uses mineral glass, the face is slightly more prone to scratches over time. However, finding a stylish, reliable, name-brand watch with a sapphire crystal under £100 is nearly impossible. At a strict £85 budget, missing out on sapphire is a completely acceptable and expected compromise.

Final Thoughts: A £85 Steal

The main attraction of the MTP-E740 series is, without a doubt, the dial. Casio has drawn clear inspiration from iconic 1970s classics, most notably the legendary Seiko Time Sonar, by utilizing a translucent dial.

Timex has introduced a larger 38mm version of the Automatic E Line, turning the compact design that returned in 2024 into a more substantial watch with an integrated-bracelet appearance. The new range includes the silver TW6A00500, the two-tone TW6A00600 and the teal TW6A00700. All three share the same case dimensions, Japanese automatic movement, horizontally textured dial and date display.

This is not the first modern E Line. Timex revived the design as the Automatic 1983 E Line Reissue with a 34mm rounded-square case. That watch followed the size and simple character of the original more closely. The 38mm models keep the familiar TV-shaped outline but move the collection in a more modern direction. They are larger, thicker and fitted with a conventional butterfly clasp instead of the tool-free expansion band used by the smaller version.

A 1983 Timex design in a much larger case

The E Line name reaches back to a Timex watch from 1983. Its rounded-square case became known as a TV dial shape. The E Line name was connected to New York’s E subway line, which carried commuters toward Manhattan’s business district. The modern 34mm reissue brought that idea back in November 2024 with a stainless-steel case, an acrylic crystal and a Japanese automatic movement.

The new watch is better described as a larger update inspired by that reissue rather than a strict recreation. Its 38mm stainless-steel case measures 45.5mm from end to end and 12.5mm thick. Those figures should give it noticeably more presence than the 34mm model. The short overall length should stop it from becoming excessive, although the wide square shape will probably look larger than a round 38mm watch.

With my approximately 8-inch wrist, this is the E Line size I would choose. The bracelet is stated to fit wrists from 150mm to 205mm, or about 5.9 to 8.1 inches, so I would be very close to its upper limit. Anyone with a similarly large wrist should check the fit before ordering or confirm whether extra links are available.

Brushed steel, polished edges and a 12.5mm profile

The case and bracelet combine brushed and polished surfaces. Vertical brushing across the broad upper case makes the shape easy to see, while polished borders add contrast around the dial opening. The bracelet flows directly into the case and closes with a butterfly deployant clasp. Timex lists the attachment width as 12mm, but this is not a watch designed for easy experiments with ordinary leather or fabric straps.

At 12.5mm thick, the Automatic E Line is not especially slim. Part of that height comes from the Miyota movement and the exhibition back. The side view also shows that the case body, bezel and flat crystal form several clear layers. The result should feel more substantial than the original 34mm E Line, even before the four-millimetre increase in width is considered.

Three versions with the same striped dial pattern

The TW6A00500 is the simplest version. Its silver-tone dial, case, hands, markers and bracelet create a clean monochrome appearance. Horizontal lines run across the dial, while applied baton markers and a printed minute track keep the display easy to read. A framed date window sits at 3 o’clock, with the Timex name above the hands and E Line Automatic printed near 6 o’clock.

The TW6A00600 keeps the silver dial but introduces gold-tone details. The bezel, crown, hands, markers and centre section of the bracelet receive the warmer colour, while the main case and outer bracelet links remain silver-tone. It is the most noticeable model and also the most expensive of the three.

The TW6A00700 uses a teal dial with the same horizontal pattern, paired with an entirely silver-tone case and bracelet. This is my preferred version. The colour makes the dial texture more obvious without turning the watch into something difficult to wear. It also gives the design more personality than the silver model while avoiding the stronger look of the two-tone option.

Mineral glass is the obvious compromise

All three watches use a flat mineral crystal. Mineral glass is tougher than ordinary acrylic and can handle everyday use, but it is more vulnerable to scratches than sapphire. At this price, sapphire would have made the specification much stronger, especially because the broad crystal is such a visible part of the design.

Water resistance is 50 metres. That is enough for rain, hand washing and light swimming, but this is not intended for diving or snorkelling.

The familiar Miyota 8215 remains inside

The movement is the Japanese Miyota calibre 8215, visible through the exhibition caseback. Timex states a power reserve of up to 40 hours, while Miyota’s current technical information gives an approximate running time of 42 hours. It has 21 jewels, runs at 21,600 vibrations per hour and supports both automatic and hand winding.

The movement also provides stop seconds and quick date correction. Its official accuracy range is -20 to +40 seconds per day. This is a long-established, practical automatic calibre rather than a highly decorated movement, although the signed Timex rotor makes the view through the back more specific to the watch.

Prices and availability

The silver TW6A00500 costs $379 in the United States, €369 in Europe and £325 in the United Kingdom. The two-tone TW6A00600 is priced at $399, €389 and £335. The teal TW6A00700 costs €369 or £325. At the time of writing, that teal reference is not listed on the official United States store.

The European and British stores show the watches available to add to the basket. The United States listings for the silver and two-tone versions are marked as pre-orders. These are regular-production models, with no announced numerical limit.

Conclusion

The 38mm Automatic E Line gives people who liked the 1983-inspired shape but found the 34mm reissue too small a much easier option. Its 45.5mm length remains controlled, the textured dials are more detailed and the integrated steel bracelet suits the broader case. The Miyota 8215 is simple, widely used and easy to understand.

My main reservation is the mineral crystal. A sapphire crystal would have been appropriate when the steel models are close to $400. Even so, I prefer this 38mm format for my 8-inch wrist. The teal TW6A00700 would be my choice. It has the strongest dial colour, keeps the case entirely in silver-tone steel and makes the horizontal texture the main attraction.

If your inner 90s kid has a soft spot for comic books and mechanical watches, Fossil’s latest release might catch your eye. The brand has launched a new Marvel collection featuring two of the most recognizable heroes on the roster: Spider-Man and The Incredible Hulk.

The Incredible Hulk Edition: Loud and Green

The Hulk watch makes a big entrance. Coming in at a chunky 45mm, it features a stainless steel case with the green giant literally bursting through the open-worked dial. Fossil leaned heavily into the classic green and purple color palette, carrying those shades through to the silicone and nylon strap.

It’s bold, it’s loud, and it honestly looks like something Bruce Banner would accidentally break during a temper tantrum.

The Spider-Man Edition: Caught in a Web?

On the other side of the ring, we have the Spider-Man edition. This one takes inspiration from the darker 1990s comic-book era, featuring a 42mm black stainless steel case. It has a gradient dial with dimensional webbing stretching across the crystal and down onto the leather strap.

However, I have a bone to pick with this one. While I appreciate the stealthy, moody vibe, I think the Spider-Man model is missing a bezel with interesting details. Looking at the smooth black case, I just feel like something is missing in terms of overall design. A textured bezel or some web-engraved details around the edge would have really tied the whole look together. Right now, it feels just a little too quiet for a superhero who never stops talking.

What I Love: Mechanics and Presentation

Where this collection really shines—and where I have to give Fossil serious credit—is the execution of the hardware and the presentation.

The Movement: I really like the fact that they chose an automatic movement for these two models. A Japanese automatic movement powers both watches, visible through the partially skeletonized dials and display casebacks. Putting a mechanical heart inside a comic-book watch elevates it from a basic novelty item to a proper collector’s piece.

The Packaging: I genuinely like Fossil’s limited-edition watches because they pay great attention to packaging and details. In my opinion, they have some of the most beautiful packaging for limited-edition watches on the market.

Both of these pieces arrive in custom, comic-book-style boxes featuring archival Marvel cover art. Each watch is also individually numbered and includes a collectible lapel pin of The Hulk facing off against Spider-Man.

The Verdict

The Spider-Man vs. The Hulk collection is a fun, nostalgic release. While I wish the Spider-Man watch had a bit more punch on the exterior, the inclusion of automatic movements and Fossil’s top-tier packaging make these a solid pickup for Marvel fans. Just make sure you have the wrist size to handle the Hulk.

At a retail price of around €449 for both version, they are priced above casual novelty territory, but the execution justifies it.

IWC introduced the Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar ProSet 140 Years Mercedes-Benz on August 13, 2026. Reference IW329603 is limited to 140 pieces, one for each year since the invention of the automobile in 1886. The anniversary edition combines a 42mm stainless steel case with a black-and-gold dial and IWC’s new ProSet perpetual calendar, which can be corrected both forward and backward.

The dial is the best part

I like the design, especially the dial. The glossy black surface gives the four subdials enough visual separation, while the solid gold appliqués and gold-plated hands make the display warmer without making it look gaudy. A white minute track keeps the outer edge clear. The date sits at 3 o’clock, the month at 6, the day at 9 and the Double Moon display at 12. A four-digit year window appears between 7 and 8 o’clock.

The brushed and polished steel case is 42mm wide and 14mm thick. It remains a substantial watch, especially on my 6.5-inch wrist, but these dimensions are easier to imagine wearing than the traditional oversized Big Pilot format. A convex sapphire crystal has anti-reflective coating on both sides, while the sapphire caseback carries the first joint Mercedes-Benz logo from 1926, combining the three-pointed star with a laurel wreath. That historical detail feels more tasteful on the back than spread across the dial.

Its gear-based module, protected by four patents, lets the owner move every calendar display forward or backward from one crown position. If the date is accidentally advanced too far, there is no need to wait for the watch to catch up. The Double Moon display serves both hemispheres and should deviate by only one day after 1,040 years.

IWC’s automatic calibre 82665 runs at 4Hz, uses 34 jewels and stores 60 hours of power. Its bidirectional Pellaton winding system uses ceramic components, while the escapement is made from nickel-phosphorus and works with a silicon hairspring. Those details matter because this is not simply an anniversary colour scheme. The movement is the real technical reason for the watch to exist.

The strap misses an opportunity

The black rubber strap has IWC’s tool-free EasX-CHANGE system, so replacing it should be simple. Functionally, that is useful. Visually, I do not think the plain design is the perfect partner for the dial or the automotive theme. IWC could have created a more distinctive strap with subtle perforation, considered stitching or another detail inspired by a Mercedes interior. Even a discreet Mercedes three-pointed star on the underside would add character without turning the front of the watch into branded merchandise.

Price, availability and my conclusion

The official European price is €40,900 including VAT, while the UK price is £32,100 including VAT. IWC’s United States page currently lists the watch for enquiry without publishing a dollar price. With only 140 examples available, this will remain a rare version of the ProSet.

I am not a Mercedes fan, so the anniversary itself is not what wins me over. The watch does. The black-and-gold dial is beautiful, the calendar is clever and the 42mm steel case makes the Big Pilot idea easier to enjoy. With a better strap, the whole design would feel complete. As delivered, it is still a beautiful watch attached to the one element I would change immediately.

The white version is the clearer tribute to Seiko’s original Laurel wristwatch from 1913. The black model keeps the same basic layout but changes the mood completely through lacquer, gold details and a warm case finish.

A Return to the 1913 Laurel

The Laurel is important because it was Japan’s first wristwatch. Its white enamel dial, expressive Arabic numerals and red 12 became a clear visual signature. The HCC005J1 is priced at €1,400 and £1,250. That is approximately $1,690 based on current currency conversion, not a confirmed United States retail price. The compact length matters as much as the 38 mm diameter, although the bright gold colour will still give the watch plenty of presence.

A small change with a clear eclipse connection

This is not a completely new MoonSwatch. It uses the familiar Mission to the Sun colour scheme with a bright yellow Bioceramic case, white tachymeter bezel and white rubber strap. The gold-coloured dial has a sun-brushed finish, while white hands and hour markers keep the display easy to read. Orange hands add contrast to the chronograph seconds and the three white subdials.

The important new detail is the black chronograph pusher at two o’clock. The lower pusher remains yellow, so the dark upper button stands out immediately. The watch is also offered from the Rolling Planet at two locations in León, first in the city centre from 12:00 to 14:00 and later at the Palacio de Congresos y Exposiciones from 18:00 to 21:00. Selected stores in Bilbao, Ibiza and Valencia also have access to it. Swatch warns that delivery may take longer than usual.

Conclusion

I like the idea more than the size of the changes. The black pusher and new-moon battery cover are clever, but most of the watch remains the regular Mission to the Sun. The €280 price is only €5 higher than the current €275 Spanish price of the standard model. What makes it special is the timing: it can be bought only in Spain on the day a total solar eclipse crosses the country. For a MoonSwatch collector who actually experiences the eclipse, that story may matter more than another completely different colour.

Conclusion

I think this collaboration works because its details come from a specific car instead of relying only on a famous name. The yellow dial, red instrument-style counters and rotary-engine marker make the connection easy to recognize. However, ¥65,780 is a high price for a quartz chronograph with Hardlex rather than sapphire. It makes the most sense for a serious Initial D or Keisuke fan, because the collectable design is clearly a larger part of the price than the basic specifications.

The timing is important. The 2026 Dutch Grand Prix will be the last Formula 1 race at Circuit Zandvoort under the current agreement. TAG Heuer has therefore created a farewell watch that looks straight into the orange grandstands rather than simply placing a race logo on an existing model.

Planned for release in August 2026, the watch is a special version of Casio’s compact analogue-digital outdoor model. Casio says the design was created after studying how campers carry small essentials.

A strap with a useful secret

This also gives the PRJ-B001EX-1 an EDC (Everyday Carry) angle, since the pocket can hold a coin, folded banknote or another small essential.

It will not replicate the finishing, history or jewellery-like presence of a Cartier Tank, and pretending otherwise would miss the point. The HBJ005 is not a small add-on to this collection. It is a Prospex Speedtimer Solar Chronograph with a completely different character from the Alpinist or Presage: steel bracelet, tachymeter bezel, proper pushers and three black sub-dials. The pale purple dial could have been a gimmick, but the black bezel and sub-dials keep it focused.

The Alpinist is still my favourite. It has the best balance of size, 72-hour movement, 20-bar water resistance and sapphire crystal, with a design that does not depend on the anniversary colour to work. The Presage comes second because its cocktail story genuinely suits the dial and the GMT is useful. The Speedtimer is the practical choice for someone who wants a solar chronograph with sapphire and a proper tachymeter. The Astron is the full technical statement, with satellite timekeeping and titanium, but its 43.3mm case makes it the most specialised piece here. The Seiko 5 Sports is more masculine, but it looks good as well and remains the easy entry point at $450. Seiko has made purple feel like a shared idea here, not a copied paint job.

The mixed brown colour is inspired by the cliffs and rocky coast around Ericeira, Portugal, one of Igarashi’s training bases. Casio mixes different colours of bio-based resin during production, so the streaks and marks will not be identical on every watch. That gives each example a slightly different surface pattern without pretending that the watch is hand-finished.

The lavender details are a smart contrast to the dark case. A purple vapor-deposited finish around the display is meant to recall the sea during the early morning and evening magic hours. I like that Casio did more than change the colours for this collaboration. Casio has officially introduced Master in Horizon Gold, a three-watch G-Shock collection that gives the Gravitymaster, Mudmaster and Mudman the same brown and light-gold finish. The models are the GR-B300H-5A, GG-B100XMH-5A and GW-9500MH-5. They look related, but their functions are very different. One is made for flying, one for connected outdoor tracking and one for solar-powered navigation without a phone.

One Colour Scheme, Three Different G-Shocks

The collection takes its name from the line where the earth appears to meet the sky. Dark brown bio-based resin bands and cases are combined with light yellow-gold ion-plated bezels. Smaller metal parts use brown ion plating and the warm colour scheme looks unusual without hiding the tough Master of G character. Every model is shock resistant and rated to 200 metres.

Mudmaster GG-B100XMH-5A

The GG-B100XMH-5A measures 55.4 x 51.3 x 19.4 mm and weighs 104 g. Its bio-based carbon case uses the Carbon Core Guard structure, while a stainless-steel bezel and reinforced case back add protection. Mud resistance, mineral glass and a two-year CR2025 battery make it the only non-solar model in the trio.

It combines a compass, altimeter, barometer and thermometer with a step counter. Bluetooth links it to the Casio Watches app for automatic time correction, around 300 world-time cities, Mission Log, Location Memory and phone finder. Other tools include sunrise and sunset data, a 1/100-second stopwatch, a 24-hour timer, five alarms and double LED lighting.

Mudman GW-9500MH-5

The GW-9500MH-5 is thinner and lighter at 56.7 x 52.7 x 14.8 mm and 88 g. It has a bio-based carbon case, stainless-steel bezel, mud resistance and mineral glass. Its two-layer LCD keeps the compass graphics separate from the main time and sensor information.

This model replaces Bluetooth with Tough Solar and Multiband 6 radio time correction. Its triple sensor measures direction, altitude, barometric pressure and temperature. The watch also has 31 time zones, sunrise and sunset times, a 1/10-second stopwatch, five alarms and Super Illuminator. A full charge runs for about six months without light or 26 months with power saving.

Gravitymaster GR-B300H-5A

The GR-B300H-5A is the largest by measurement but the lightest at 59 x 54.7 x 15.7 mm and 71 g. It uses Carbon Core Guard, a screw-lock crown, mineral glass and a bio-based resin band. Tough Solar powers the fully analogue display.

Bluetooth provides automatic time correction, easy settings, around 300 world-time cities, flight log and phone finder. Dual time displays two cities together. The rotary disc at 9 o’clock shows alarm status, works with the stopwatch and indicates the battery level. A full charge provides about five months of normal use or 18 months with power saving.

Prices and My Choice

Confirmed Japanese prices are ¥60,500 for the GG-B100XMH-5A, ¥63,800 for the GW-9500MH-5 and ¥49,500 for the GR-B300H-5A. Recent exchange rates put them at roughly $370, €325 or £278 for the Mudmaster, $390, €342 or £293 for the Mudman and $303, €266 or £227 for the Gravitymaster. These are conversions rather than confirmed regional retail prices.

I already own a Gravitymaster, so the GR-B300H-5A is the watch that catches my attention first. It is also the lightest and least expensive model here. At 54.7 mm wide it is undeniably large, but an eight-inch wrist gives it enough room. The Mudman remains the practical choice for anyone who wants solar power, radio time correction and outdoor sensors without depending on a phone.
