This exhibit acknowledges essayist Wendell Berry’s projection of the passing on of traditions, while embracing each generation’s distinctive perceptions and innovations.

The resulting experience of these portions of the shared series, titled “Echos on the Horizon”, is to enrich the viewers’ looking and thinking, specifically of the contemporary western experience we all share. The artists aspire to present contemplative moments of the universal themes represented by sunrise and sunsets; earth’s surfaces and forms; the West’s spaces; and the individual’s sense of place in it.

The Parson family has continued their tradition of creativity not only in the Visual Arts but in their past and present larger family’s active contributions to the world of folk music, dance, education, nand activism. The family maintains a private art retreat in southeastern Colorado with its ever-present sense of inspiration.

The post “Echoes on the Horizon” appeared first on The World Journal.
Angel Fire Council tightens rental rules, accelerates housing, prepares for wildfires - The World Journal https://worldjournalnewspaper.com/?p=487695 2026-01-08T09:24:00.000Z

by Ruth Stodghill ANGEL FIRE — At its Dec. 16 meeting, the Angel Fire Village Council focused on a mix of immediate and ongoing issues, from cracking down on short-term rental violations to moving workforce housing off the drawing board and into actual homes. If there is someone who would like to help with this ride and make it happen this year, please contact me a info@spcycling.org.

My goal is to get volunteers to do these two jobs on board so we can open registration on February 1. If that is not possible, and the ride cannot happen this year, we will work hard to make the ride happen in 2027.

In addition, I would like to thank our amazing sponsors of former years. Local: Bachman & Associates, San Isabel Electric/Basin Electric, Charlie’s Market, Two Peaks Fitness, La Veta United Methodist church, the La Veta and Stonewall Fire Protection Districts, La Veta and Stonewall Fire Auxiliaries, La Veta Liquors, Mountain Merman, Alys’ restaurant, We RV Champions, La Veta Pines RV park, Code of the West, Dog Bar and Grill, World Journal, Harding’s Corner B&B, and Two Fox Cabins. Our out-of-town sponsors: Osprey, Spradley Motors (Pueblo), Skratch drink, Pickle Power, Kristi Mountain Sports (Alamosa), Tarantula Cycles (Trinidad), and Great Divide Ski, Hike, and Bike (Pueblo).

In addition to these sponsors, we have so many incredible volunteers who help with the Thursday packet stuffing, Friday night dinner set up and serving, Friday night and Saturday morning registration and packet pick-up, setting up the aid stations and manning them throughout the day, SAG (support and gear) drivers on the route to help any rider in trouble, putting up signs in La Veta and along the route to Segundo and back, getting the highway patrol and ambulances on both sides of the pass, setting up the tables/chairs at the train depot for the post-ride BBQ, and all the clean up when the ride is over. The Stonewall folks do most of the work on their side of Cuchara Pass. Clearly, this event is a huge endeavor that brings visitors to our communities, benefiting everyone.

Our two main beneficiaries are the La Veta and Stonewall Fire Protection Districts (Thousands of dollars) and our minor beneficiaries are the La Veta Public Library and the La Veta School District (Hundreds of dollars.) My wish is that we can find a person/persons who love this area and have a willingness to join us to make this ride happen in 2026. The ride is always on the second Saturday in August. We have also received great support from the La Veta Board of Trustees. I am sure they would want to see this ride happen in 2026.

The post No Stonewall Ride this year appeared first on The World Journal.
This Week in History - The World Journal https://worldjournalnewspaper.com/?p=487684 2026-01-08T09:17:00.000Z

by Nancy Christofferson Walsenburg 1890: The Rouse mine, which will open tomorrow to fill special orders after the tracks were finally cleared of the deep snow which prevented trains from reaching camp. Two eighth graders will be moving on from the Falcons. We’d like to thank Andre Ortiz and Hunter Griego for the four years of work they’ve put in for our program. Their leadership on and off the court was special to experience. Thanks for working hard during the summer!

Our boys got a few wins and learned a lot of lessons. Our lineup was decimated for two weeks by multiple viruses, as is an annual event for programs around these parts. A few fifth graders gained some experience with the big guys, and witnessed what it takes to be successful in the sport of basketball. We want to congratulate our new basketball coach, Domonique Espinoza (local sports legend), on a successful first season. Go Falcons!

The post Gardner Valley boys basketball season wrap up appeared first on The World Journal.
New at My One Hour Office - The World Journal https://worldjournalnewspaper.com/?p=487680 2026-01-08T09:15:00.000Z
by Mary Jo Tesitor

WALSENBURG — Come by My One Hour Office, 532 Main Street in Walsenburg to see three beautiful new private offices, just completed by CMB Construction. The second crash in this location is a fatal crash involving three vehicles.

Troopers responded to reports of an initial crash involving a Semi traveling southbound, which had slowed as traffic reduced speed due to poor visibility from sun glare. The semi was rear-ended by a box truck. This crash resulted in moderate injuries to the driver of the box truck who was airlifted to a local hospital.

As the drivers of the two vehicles had moved to the right shoulder to exchange information, with traffic still moving slowly, the second crash occurred several minutes later.

The second crash on Interstate 25 involved three vehicles, including a Ford F250, a Hyundai Elantra and a Hyundai Sonata. The Ford, driven by a 46-year-old male, rear-ended the Elantra, causing the Ford to roll and slide, striking the rear of the Sonata. After being hit, the Elantra crossed the center median and ended up on the right shoulder of the northbound lanes. The driver of the Ford, Beauhanan Andreatta, 46, of Walsenburg, suffered fatal injuries and died on the scene. The driver of the Sonata was not injured. The driver of the Elantra was taken to a local hospital with an unknown level of injury.

The Interstate was shut down in both directions at the beginning stages of this incident, but northbound was reopened at 9:12 a.m.. Southbound I-25 remains closed, and traffic is being detoured at exit 41, the Rugby Road exit.

The post Secondary crash turns fatal southbound I-25, south of Walsenburg appeared first on The World Journal.
New physical therapy place opens in La Veta - The World Journal https://worldjournalnewspaper.com/?p=487673 2026-01-08T09:10:00.000Z

LA VETA — Mountain Time Physical Therapy, where we’re dedicated to delivering quality, evidence-based physical therapy tailored specifically for the rural communities of Southern Colorado. Pictured above are Barbara Hughes (client), owners Sara and Andy Slifko, and Christina McCleary with the Huerfano County Chamber of Commerce.
